Xbox 360 Ring Of Death Repair?
When microsoft repair the broken xbox 360, what changes do they make so you never have the same problem again.
Or do they just take something out and replace it until so it is likely to do the same thing again.
My 360 broke down about 2 months ago now and since I got it back it runs better then ever! Mid January I got the RROD, rang up MS and they supple the label, but I would have to find a box. Once it was ready I rang up UPS and arranged a collection on the same day (Monday).
Like you I was wondering whether I would get mine back or some repaired one, mine was pristine so I wanted mine back! You don’t say if your a registered Live user but I wasn’t so I couldn’t track where it was. You’ll have to be careful of when they deliver it, there is no email or anything, they just turn up with it. Looking at others experiences they had to wait 2 weeks to a month, so I didn’t know what to expect.
Then on the following Wednesday (week after it was taken) it came back! I was surprised as nobody else seemed to have theirs back so quickly. So that was a good start, once opened they had also given me a free month on Live, even better. But the best thing of all was that I got my own 360 back, the quiter BenQ drive and the new heatsink as well which now makes it run much cooler. Now looking back on other stories I have been pretty lucky as everyone else is getting refurbs.
I am not saying that you will get your own back as I don’t know what they base the process on, was mine a quick fix or was it not suitable for refurbishment. I’m not sure if the cause of the RROD is the same for everybody so what they change will vary but on the sheet that it comes with it will just say motherboard. Sadly you could end up with a refurb but there isn’t anything you can do about that, if it is the cooling that is the problem then it is unlikely to happen again as they are now fitting new heatsinks. If you look around the internet there are guides to spotting if you have the new heatsink, you do it by looking throught mesh at the bottom and you’ll see it.
Overall I was really pleased when mine was repaired and the service was good, don’t try and fix it yourself, it will just void the warranty and whats the point when they will fix it for free? Hope this helps, sorry if it was loads I was in the same situation and there wasn’t much support!
